Meeting him has always been a dream of mine, one that seemed so distant and unreachable. After a year of trying, I finally had the honour of visiting him amidst tight security. This emotional meeting was a profound experience, and I am deeply grateful to have received his blessings. Thank you, Achan Chiang, for this trip and your support to let me touch my dream.
Aspiring to Meet the Dalai Lama
For the past year, meeting the Dalai Lama was a dream that seemed almost unattainable. As a business consultant in Thailand, my schedule was demanding, and finding the right channels to arrange such a meeting proved incredibly challenging. I reached out to various contacts and made numerous attempts, but each effort seemed to hit a dead end.
The Unexpected Opportunity
Then, fate intervened. Master Chiang, a respected figure in the Thai Spiritual community, organized a Thai delegation of about 20 people to visit the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. When I heard about this opportunity, my heart leaped with joy. Master Chiang graciously included me in this delegation, and I felt like I was about to touch my dream.
Journey to Dharamsala
The journey to Dharamsala was filled with anticipation and excitement. As our delegation arrived amidst the majestic Himalayan backdrop, the atmosphere was charged with a sense of spiritual anticipation. The closer we got to our destination, the more I felt a profound sense of peace and purpose.
Who is the Dalai Lama?
The Dalai Lama, born Tenzin Gyatso, is the 14th spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born on July 6, 1935, in a small village called Taktser in northeastern Tibet. At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama and was taken to Lhasa to begin his monastic education. His Holiness assumed full political power in Tibet in 1950, at the age of 15, during a period of significant turmoil due to Chinese military advances into Tibetan territory.
How He Became So Famous
The Dalai Lama’s rise to global fame began in 1959 when he fled to India following the Tibetan Uprising against Chinese rule. His peaceful resistance to the occupation and his tireless advocacy for the Tibetan cause garnered international attention. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. The Dalai Lama’s message of compassion, non-violence, and universal responsibility has resonated with millions worldwide, making him a revered spiritual leader beyond the boundaries of Tibetan Buddhism.
Why He is Considered a Living God
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is believed to be the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This belief holds that the Dalai Lama is a living embodiment of compassion and wisdom, reincarnated to serve humanity. This divine status contributes to his reverence among followers, who see him not only as a spiritual leader but as a living deity guiding them towards enlightenment and peace.
Meeting the Dalai Lama
On May 27th, 2024, amidst tight security, we finally had the honor of meeting His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As I approached him, my heart was pounding, yet a serene calm washed over me. His presence exuded warmth and compassion, and when he smiled, it felt like he was reaching into my soul, understanding my journey and aspirations without a word being spoken. I could hardly speak, as I gazed to his powerful eyes and tears flowed down my cheeks. It was an emotional connect which is hard to depict. He caressed my cheek and I could feel his blessings transpire to me, making it a magical experience.
His Health Conditions Now
At the age of 88, the Dalai Lama remains active, though he has scaled back his public engagements. His Holiness has faced health challenges typical of his age, including a bout with prostate treatment and other age-related ailments. Despite these challenges, he continues to inspire through his teachings and public appearances, demonstrating remarkable resilience and dedication to his spiritual duties.
Receiving His Blessings
The meeting was brief but incredibly powerful. Receiving the Dalai Lama’s blessings was an emotional and transformative experience. His eyes conveyed profound wisdom and kindness. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and peace. It was as if all my struggles and efforts had culminated in this one sublime encounter.
Plans for the Next Selection of the Dalai Lama
The selection of the next Dalai Lama is a topic of significant importance and concern, both for Tibetan Buddhists and the global community. The Dalai Lama has indicated that his reincarnation might be found outside of Tibet to avoid Chinese interference. He has also suggested that the traditional practice of reincarnation could end with him if the institution is deemed no longer beneficial. These statements have sparked considerable debate and highlight the challenges of maintaining spiritual traditions in a politically complex world.
